Chapter 9

Connie

Wow, I can’t believe he’s been discharged. We’re on the way to my apartment. He wants to drive, but until he’s been cleared to, it’s not happening. He still has to pass a lot of cognitive tests in regard to his memory, and physically he’s not as healed as we both would like.

“Angel, I’ve talked to the Ohio Bar Association. I have to be evaluated by a committee and tested before I can have my license reinstated. I was put on suspension when I missed two trial appearances. They wish to meet with me as soon as I can. Do you have any time off?”

“I get two weeks every year, but I have to schedule it in advance.”

“You can’t get away?”

“Well, I happened to put in for it the second you woke up. I get it in three weeks.” Unfortunately, my schedule was for a month in advance. I could try and trade with someone for a sooner vacation, but normally that is extremely hard to pull off.

“Wait until we get out of this car. I’m going to kiss you until you beg for more,” he warns and my body simmers and aches for his sexy threat. We’re about five minutes from my apartment and I don’t want to wait. I squirm in my seat, thinking about his lips on me. For the past week, we’ve been stealing kisses and touches. I only had the one day off. He was released earlier today, but he waited until my shift ended before leaving. Devin sent one of his security friends to watch over my place when we arrive. It’s not as if the guys know David’s alive, but it’s best to play it safe.

I pull into a parking spot in front of my door, which is pure luck. Normally, I have to park down the block. On street cleaning days, I’m lucky if there’s any spot on the next two. I grab my bag and Devin’s security guy takes David’s things for me. I can see that David has some motor skill issues when it comes to stairs, but don’t say anything.

“I’m sorry,” he says, obviously referring to his pace in getting to the top of the stairs.

“Don’t apologize, David. You need to take your time. I’m glad you’re alive,” I respond, sliding my key into the lock and giving him a big smile. “We have a lot of time for you to get better and start manhandling me like we want.” I see the guard blush and hold back a chuckle.

“Thanks, Frank. We’ve got it from here,” he tells him.

“I’ll be out here for a couple hours. Before I go, the police will send a replacement.” They hadn’t arrested anyone yet, and they seem to be playing their cards close to the vests. They’re getting all the evidence behind the scenes before they arrest her and so she and her buddies can’t get away.

“You have a nice place,” David says, looking around the living room. It’s a small apartment, but I keep it fairly neat, except for my bedroom and bathroom.
